EMB Update

Barb stated that she was advised through several conversation with VSB Continuing Education and the Ministry of Education, a couple of years ago that if a curriculum was submitted by teachers/district to the Ministry, it may be possible to have this course subsidized for summer school class because currently there is no curriculum or IRP for Mandarin Language Arts K to Grade 4.  Therefore summer school for Primary Mandarin is not subsidized.  Barb would see if there was a follow up email she can forward to Margaret.

 

Food Garden is Growing!

More vegetables have been harvested!  Students have been enjoying radishes, lettuce, spinach, bok choy, collard greens, leeks and peas!  

Corn, tomato, zucchini, cucumber, brussel sprouts, broccoli and peppers were transplanted to the garden with SPEC workshops at the end of May.  These will continue to grow over the summer months and will need watering!

Watering, New Hose Cart

Ms de Jardin’s class continues to water the entire Food Garden during the school year

Last year’s plastic hose cart broke and one of the hoses was punctured, so a new sturdier hose cart was purchased from Lee Valley (cost ~$200)

We now have our own watering key (cost ~$8 from Amazon) instead of borrowing one from the Bal every time we water

Summer Watering

We have some parents and teachers volunteering to water during the summer, but we can still use more help!  The school’s daycare is no longer able to help out.  Please let Val know if you are able to help out even one or two weeks during the summer.  An orientation session will be held for volunteers the week of June 15-19

Garden Storage Box

Garden supplies have been moved to the storage box (except the wheelbarrow, some old pots and the seeds to keep them cool and dry in the Boys Change Room)

Harvest Festival with SPEC on Mon June 15

7 classes from Grades 1-6 will be participating

We will be making smoothies, salads, soup and stir fry for the students to sample

VSB Grounds Approval for more boxes and compost bin

Proposal to VSB Grounds to be submitted by July 1st deadline for 10 more raised 4’x8’ raised planter boxes and a 3-bin compost

Russell Evans from Tupper Secondary has us in his schedule for Fall 2015 to build the raised planter boxes with donated wood from a Norquay family

Parent Jimmy Yang will help us to build the 3-bin compost at his warehouse with donated materials

Garden Club

Ms Chang is leading this very popular and growing extra-curricular club on Tuesdays at noon and could use some assistance.  Please contact Ms Chang if you are available to help out with the Garden Club

Elections – call for nominations for 2015/2016 school year:

A. PAC co-Chairperson

  • speak on behalf of the Council
  • consult with Council members
  • preside at membership and executive meetings
  • ensure that an agenda is prepared
  • appoint committees where authorized by the membership or Executive
  • ensure that the Council is represented in school and district activities
  • ensure that Council activities are aimed at achieving the purposes set out in the Constitution
  • be a signing officer
  • submit an annual report

B. The Treasurer

  • be a signing officer
  • ensure all funds of the Council are properly accounted for
  • disburse funds as authorized by the membership or Executive
  • ensure that proper financial records and books of account are maintained
  • report on all receipts and disbursements at general and Executive meetings
  • make financial records and books of account available to members upon request
  • have the financial records and books of account ready for inspection or audit annually
  • with the assistance of the executive, draft an annual budget
  • ensure that another signing officer has access to the financial records and books of account in the treasurer’s absence
  • submit an annual financial statement at the annual general meeting

C The Volunteer Coordinator  

  • keep an up-to-date list of all parents/guardians able to volunteer at the school
  • contact volunteers as events/needs arise to arrange for help
  • seek to involve parents/guardians in the activities of the school/PAC

D The Fundraising Chair  

  • plan for the appropriate amount of fundraisers to meet the PAC’s budget
  • summarize each fundraiser and report to PAC
  • keep records of the effectiveness of PAC fundraisers and advise the PAC
  • make a tentative plan each spring for the following year’s fundraisers

E. Members-at-Large  

  • serve in a capacity to be determined by the Council at the time of election, and at other times as the Council requires
  • submit an annual report
